Recently, the RAC was a sponsor for the first Rochester Chamber’s Lemonade Day. We hosted the "Tasting Day" event in the Neighborhood. Matt Remick (RAC President and Majority Owner) was one of the chamber members asked to judge each lemonade stand based on set criteria.
The Neighborhood Expedition Camp (ages 11-13) drew inspiration from the Chamber and we organized our own lemonade stand event. Assistant General Manager, Sarah Stille and I were asked to be judges for this RAC event. Two teams (a boys' team and a girls' team) pitched their concepts to us. They shared the charity they chose to donate their earnings to as well as their marketing plan. They also described their challenges and opportunities in working together as a team.
We asked them questions and they had well-thought-out answers. One moment was especially impactful for me. As we were almost finished judging, I asked one final question and told them that the answers they gave would influence my decision. My question was “what was the most important thing, to you, about doing this project?” I told them I wanted each person to answer this question. Several replies were just what I was looking for (i.e. giving money to charity, teamwork, etc.). Then, one of the participants told us she is extremely shy, and she didn’t know any of the other girls in the camp. She said the most important thing to her was the friendships she made through this process.
Last week, the teams put up their lemonade stands at each entrance/exit of our parking lot. Thanks to many of you, they raised close to $500. The RAC is matching what they raised, and the kids will present a check to each of their charities soon.
Being a part of this experience left me feeling proud. Proud of those kids and our camp staff. Both teams shared how challenging it was, in the beginning, to come together as a team. They also said that the beginning days were not good and looked nothing like their final presentation. In the end, friendships were created, and it was about so much more than lemonade.
This even made the local news with KIMT. Here is a link to the clip if you would like to see more about it.

Mayo Clinic Blood Drive at the RAC
The Rochester Athletic Club is hosting a Mayo Clinic drive on Tuesday, July 26th from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm and Wednesday, July 27th from 7:00 am - 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm. Every six minutes, a patient at Mayo Clinic needs a transfusion of blood or blood products. A simple blood donation can save the life of a child with leukemia, restore the strength of a cancer patient, or provide a critical transfusion to an accident victim. There is no substitute for this lifesaving gift, so patients rely upon the caring spirit of blood donors.

Member Pet Peeves - Improperly Re-Racking Weights
Improperly re-racking weights is not only frustrating to members and staff, it can also be dangerous. Top left and the center photo show plates returned to the improper pin; they become a fall hazard for the next user. The bottom right photo demonstrates a plate buried in the wrong location, causing the next member to do extra work. The bottom left image shows a weight barely placed on the pin, making it an immediate fall hazard. Finally, the top right photo is a tripping hazard. For the safety and courtesy of others, please return your weights to the proper location when you are finished using them.
