The Accidental Gift
A friend and I were working on a project together a few months ago. I had not seen him in a while and I noticed that his face looked a bit swollen around his jawline on his left side. At the risk of having it being none of my business, I asked him if he knew that his jaw was swollen. The project we were working on soon became secondary as he was consumed by my question. The mirror became his sole focus for the next hour or so. I am sure he was feeling a bit concerned that something was wrong with him but he also brushed it off that he was just overweight. The more consumed he became, the worse I felt for bringing it up.
I had not heard from my friend until a couple weeks ago. He explained to me that after my infamous question, he made an appointment to see his doctor. It may have been the placebo effect of my comment but he was not feeling that well. After many tests, they gave him a clean bill of health. But then the doctor said to him, “you should lose some weight”.
Fast forward to a couple weeks ago. My friend looks great and he shared with me he has lost 62 pounds. There were other factors that contributed to my friend’s motivation but the point of the story is; you never know what is going to motivate someone to change their lifestyle to focus on their health and well being.
Imagine a time when the people you are closest to all live a healthy lifestyle. Most people do not do it because it is not easy. I challenge you to be someone’s encouragement and invite them to the club with you and be their workout buddy to help them on their journey. If you get them to the habit stage, you will have given them the ultimate gift.
There are so many of you that are the model of health and wellness and I commend you for being an inspiration to all those around you. However, If you or someone you know is looking for guidance or help, please reach out.
